This episode of OPD Voices features the Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative (AWWDI). As a nationwide OPD in Nigeria, AWWDI addresses issues impacting women and girls with disabilities, including gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health rights, empowerment, political participation, advocacy as a foundation, and engagement with both government and non-government stakeholders to shape policies, programmes, and activities. The organisation works through self-help groups within communities, enabling members to discuss local issues and connect with key stakeholders, especially government and non-government actors. Currently, AWWDI has about 130 groups across Nigeria, representing over 4,000 women with disabilities. They are preparing to expand into West Africa with a new strategic plan.
Employment provides income, boosts self-esteem, and fosters social integration — a key to social cohesion and long-term stability. Our new video on Inclusive Employment Promotion addresses this aspect of employment of persons with disabilities.
